Persepolis NGO founded in 1999 in south of Iran near Persepolis Monument with support of group of drug users and their families. First substitution therapy with Buprenorphine (methadone was not available at that time) and establishment of drop in centre and outreach activities were among the achievement of this small group of people. After 3 years of activity we moved our office to the capital Tehran and started our multisectoral activities among the key stake holders for the first official harm reduction project in Iran. With the help of Iran Ministry of health and Drug control headquarter in Sep 2003 we got the support from UNODC office for lunching pilot project on outreach and NSEP in south of Tehran named Ghar districts.
Since now we have opened 5 drop in centers in south ring of Tehran with 5000 street drug user service delivery including outreach, NSEP, voluntary testing and counseling, social care and one the most successful one methadone maintenance treatment.
We have the largest MMT centre in country (around 600 street drug users come to our centers on daily basis) and more than %70 have showed significant improvement and we think that if we be bale to offer further social support to them this one stop shop model would be one of the most effective model in the region for reducing the harm of illicit drug use.
Our current program:
1. Design & implementation of outreach with NSEP for IDUs in Tehran capital for the first time in Iran.
2. Organizing workshops & training courses both national & regional in harm reduction topics for NGOs & GOs, PLWHAs, drug users self help groups & general population
3. Making the first PLWHA support group in Iran (PLWHA NGO)
